• When Getty picked Nancy up for Thanksgiving she got a surprise. His usual vehicle was a 5-year old Ford F-150 pickup truck that he kept immaculate. (He had a title, but he did not buy it from a dealer and maybe all the numbers did not match.) However, for Thanksgiving he picked Nancy up in a Geo (Suzuki) Tracker, a tiny SUV that was over three decades old; he kidded that it was "his age" (it was actually older). Usually it was a vehicle he only used in bad weather. He did not want to talk about the Ford.
• Nancy's first thought was that he had an accident but did not have insurance. Well, we discovered later that the lack of car insurance was really a minor issue, his greater problem was a need for money to pay off mounting gambling debts owed to a growing number of bookies who were just plain unreasonable about collecting money. Working with loan sharks, bookies will let gamblers run up a debt as long as there is collateral - like the immaculate truck - which the loan shark can take. If needed, the debt is sometimes sold to a more serious loan shark for collection. Getty was right at the edge of that next level, where interest includes blood and pain. Plus, some people learned Getty had promised the same collateral to several parties. One of them caught wind of it and finally insisted on holding the collateral for him, so he would not get confused again... or skip town.
• At the Thanksgiving brunch Getty made a point of showing everybody that Nancy's ring (worn on her necklace) was similar to her mother's. Holding them next to each other made the point that Nancy's stone was so much larger.
